14/09
On Sunday, 14 September, we gather at the Grote Begijnhof, Leuven, to reclaim our public spaces from the traces of Big Tobacco and to open space for reflection, art and imagination. This event is brought to you thanks to the support of LOV2030, Leuven's candidacy to become the European Capital of Culture in 2030. Join us!
Registration is required. Please complete the form below.
What kind of city do we want to live in?
More clean? More green? More just?
09:00 – 09:40 - the exact meeting location (in the Groot Begijnhof) will be shared by email after registration.
We begin with a simple plant-based breakfast. Part of the catering is kindly provided by the Biotop Leuven.
Together, we will pause and ask: What kind of city are we shaping? Whose traces do we see in the streets?
Bring a text, a poem, a drawing, or simply your presence. Materials will be provided for those who wish to create on the spot.
09:40 – 12:30
A collective action in the streets: we pick up cigarette butts and other litter from our streets.
As we pick up litter, we can simultaneously create small, personal expressive marks (a short line, symbol, or word) on provided cards. These will integrate building blocks for a final collaborative art journal, together with our texts, drawings, etc.
Coffee-to-go during our route is kindly offered by ONAN.
Why cigarette butts? Because they are made of plastic and are the most littered item on earth. Because they leak heavy metals and carcinogens into soil and water. Because they are both intimate and industrial, both private habit and public waste. This action is not charity. It is not only a clean-up. It is a collective intervention: a way to make visible what usually disappears into the cracks. To expose how a multibillion-dollar industry externalises its costs onto bodies, streets and ecosystems, and how we, as citizens, can refuse to carry those traces in silence.
All materials are provided. Bring only a water bottle and your presence.
